Because you are sharing truck space with other people (strangers), it is a much more economical way of shipping smaller quantities of freight. The downside is slower transit times, less predictable delivery date, and higher % of damages than full truckload due to more loading/unloading of the freight. Your freight gets picked up →  taken to a local terminal → sorted → placed on a truck heading towards the destination → dropped off at a terminal local to the destination → sorted → placed on a truck for final delivery An impressive feat by the LTL truckers out there. A high commitment to infrastructure (both physical and technological), organization, and service is shown by all members of these companies. Which LTL carriers deserve a shout-out?? Ship Smarter.
